This museum of popular culture is located in Santa Lucia de Barva, a small town in the province of Heredia. Inaugurated in 1994, the building occupied by the museum is a traditional house with various rooms that has been renovated; the former home of one of the country’s former president, Alfredo Gonzalez Flores. Your visit to this museum will take you back in time to experience the timeless way of life and rural traditions of Costa Rica. It is furnished with objects and utensils of everyday life. These objects are a true representation of Costa Rican beliefs, customs and values.
In addition to these objects, the photographs and decorated ceramic masks will testify to the agricultural culture of the Costa Rican past. Outside, there is a garden of medicinal plants and some fruit trees that are still used. The museum offers guided tours and workshops regularly. There is a restaurant that offers traditional meals and drinks. If you’ll want to, you’ll be able to take part in one of the cooking workshops; thus, you will be able to taste your own Costa Rican culinary creation. There is also a shop where you can buy souvenirs, such as: ceramic masks, embroidery and local products. Have the guarantee that this visit will be rewarding. The Popular Culture Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 8:30am to 4:30pm, and Sunday, from 9am to 4pm.
